Yayasan Sime Darby Pre-University Scholarship Programme 2010/2011

1st LEVEL ASSESSMENT:

Task 1: Fill in your particulars in their website
Task 2: Write an essay in less than 450 words about your future life or career.

You are supposed to write the essay within the time limit suggested even though there is no timer. This is as a practice to enable you to be used with the timed tasks in the next stages (if you qualify).

........................................................................................................................

2nd LEVEL ASSESSMENT:

Round Table Discussion.
This is a group activity consists of 6 people with an assigned business case study.

You'll be given around 5 minutes (if I'm not mistaken) to read the case. Then, you'll be given another 5 minutes to read the questions. After that, you'll be given another 5-10 min to draft your answer and idea for the discussion.

Well, all I knew was that everything was timed by the facilitator in the room. I still remember that I don't even have enough time to read the last page...I advise you to just read through briefly and if you still have time, you can scan for important information from the case study. The case study was about Harley Davidson. We were given information like the history of Harley Davidson, it's ups and downs, product range and so on in about 3 pages. We were asked to discuss on the marketing strategies and others. The discussion was recorded and everyone was grabbing the chance to talk since the discussion time is very limited and we wanted to prevail among others. I actually don't even know what is Harley Davidson until I came back home and searched online...pity me...but I still crapped a lot.

BRING along:
Please provide the following documents for submission (DO NOT bind or put in file):
1) Photocopy of IC (Write across the IC "For Sime Darby Use Only")
2) 2 passport-sized photograph
3) SPM Result
4) 5 certificates (original and photocopy) that you had stated in the online form and you most proud of

You see, in the email, they did not ask to bring along photocopy of SPM result, right? But, when I went there, the receptionist asked for it. So, how? I went to the office and photocopied a page of my result slip for RM 0.50!!! RM 0.50 for a page of black and white paper? I was like...OMG...

.........................................................
...............................................................

3rd LEVEL ASSESSMENT:

Task 1: Presentation
This is an individual task, which requires candidate to extract key information and solutions from the case study given to be presented to the assessor.

You have to read the case study, find out the important information like strength and weaknesses of the company and present it out in point form or graph or anything you like. Then, you have to give your ideas and solutions to increase the sales of the business. You will be given marker pens and mahjong papers.

Task 2: Group Discussion
Candidates will be given a case study and will be working in a team to solve the assigned tasks.

This one was pretty funny. We were given another case study with their simple account summary. We have to choose between 3 options, namely, to move the factory, to build a new factory at another location or to close the factory. Each options will have pros and cons. Thus, we have to discuss about it in long terms and short terms, whether it'll decrease the profit, tarnish the image of the factory or so on.

Suddenly, at the middle of the discussion, there was a 'fax' coming in (new information sheet brought in by the facilitator). Now, we had to analyse the new info and make new considerations again. We saw the account summary and started to count the profitability with the calculators provided. All of us on the table counted really long, busy pressing the calculators...because we don't know what to count for! Plus, I hate Accounting! Later, a girl came out with a figure and we all just agreed with her and keep on crapping till the time finished...sad case...

Task 3: Role Play
This is an individual task, which requires candidate to play a certain role as described in a case study.

I was given a case study. I had to stand in the shoe of Mr A. Mr A have to choose whether to continue working in Malaysia or to migrate to Singapore. Again, there are pros and cons like higher salary but family members are used to local environment and so on. The facilitator served as an interviewer that will prompt you with complicated questions on your choice. So, you must have a firm decision and strong reasons for your decision.

.........................................................................................................................

4th LEVEL ASSESSMENT:

Interview about yourself

This was definitely the easiest stage. This one was just like a normal interview, asking about your hobbies, studies, ambitions and others. I did not qualify for this stage. I waited for their call and email really long because they said that candidates will be informed whether they get through or not. Somehow, I waited and did not get any reply from them...But, I knew that I was disqualified because my friend went to this stage and I was not invited.

:(

Another sad thing was...it was a nice place but no lunch provided at all stages that I went...

Last month, I was using my TNG in monorail station. When I was about to touch out, there's error occurring in the display and I couldn't get out. Since I am rushing, I just touch again and went. But I realize that my balance is much lower and I am sure they must have charged be so much extra. Then I went to the counter and ask why. Well, the personnel said that they are not able to check and I should call the careline of TNG instead.

After 2 days, I check my statement, PENALTY! RM5 nett gone..

Hence, I emailed them (they reply quite fast).

3rd, 4th, 5th paragraph :

6th paragraph :

Conclusion ( repeat your stand & reasons)

Are you aiming for Band 6?

Answer:

It is already 1.30 p.m. The most awaited bell has rung. You already started to pack your bag and get ready to go back home for a nap. Suddenly, you thought of having to stay back at school until 4.00 p.m. for your co-curricular activity. The plan of getting a nice comfortable nap on your lovely bedroom has been ruined by the co-curricular activity. Are students and teachers glad to stay back after school for co-curricular activities, almost daily?

Co-curricular activities are programmes organized by schools for students. They are being carried out after school hours. Co-curricular activities consist of uniform bodies, clubs or societies, sports or games, and service or charity work. They are said to be the essential element in shaping a person’s worth of belief in life. I partially agree that co-curricular activities play the major role in moulding one’s credibility in life for three reasons, namely, co-curricular activities can help students to have better leadership qualities and improve communication skills or soft skills but academics aspect is vital as well.

Firstly, co-curricular activities can build leadership qualities during one’s involvement in those activities. Each society that has been established for students in school will need a list of committee members to govern the club or society. Thus, most students will be given an opportunity to handle and administer the itineraries or activities in the particular club. These elected committee members or board of directors will have to lead a team, group, squad or platoon in order to assure that everything will be implemented as planned. For example, there will be posts like captains, presidents, head prefects, secretaries and treasurers to maintain the well-being of their own groups. Being a secretary or treasurer will also train the students to write minutes of meetings or reports and prepare accounts or financial statements which will be very useful for their future working life or even foe self records at home. Therefore, co-curricular activities can build great leadership qualities in a person.

Besides that, co-curricular activities are also important to enhance one’s communication skills or soft skills. Many employers have been lamenting that fresh graduates are lacked of soft skills needed in the working place. Those students should involve themselves in co-curricular activities to sharpen their communication skills from younger age. This is because they can mix and mingle around during meetings and activities held by their clubs that they join. They will learn to communicate with each other as a group to fulfil a task or complete an activity. In this way, they can get more acquaintances or friends too. In addition, this can improve social integration as well since they are mixing around with people from different races and ages. Not only that, they can learn to cooperate with their senior or junior members during a task or to build rapport with each other. The invention of social networks like Facebook, Skype, or Friendster have been a barrier to people to communicate face-to-face and meet up in person for a chat as everything is done online already. Ergo, co-curricular activities are crucial to improvise one’s communication and soft skills, instead of letting the students to sit in front of their modern square screens during their free time.

However, academics or paper qualifications are vital too. This is why only 10% are allocated for co-curricular activities and 90% are allocated on major exam results when selecting scholars for admission into public universities in Malaysia. Besides, most scholarship criteria are based on excellent exam results instead of their co-curricular achievements. That is why most parents want their children to pass exams with flying colours and keep them busy with tuitions and skip their co-curricular activities in school. Moreover, a Masters holder will be given a better position than a degree holder during job recruitments, as we can see in newspaper classifieds too. Those that are less educated will just work as blue collar workers while those that have better qualifications will be the white collar workers or sit in an air-conditioned office, on the top level of the building. After all, your maid will not be labouring in your house anymore if she or he has gained a better qualification. Hence, curriculum is also crucial in one’s life too.

In conclusion, I partially agree that co-curricular activities play the major role in moulding one’s credibility in life based on the point that co-curricular activities can help to gain leadership qualities and improve communication skills, but academics is conclusive too. Hopefully, the young generations will have a balance between their studies and co-curricular involvements.

MUET Result

The mid year 2011 Malaysian University English Test (MUET) will be officially out on MONDAY, 13 JUNE 2011. For school candidates, your teacher will announce your result at 10 am whereas the private candidates will get their result through mail to their house.

If you can't wait to know your result, you can check your result via SMS from 12.00 midnight, June 13 ( I know most of you haven't sleep because you just can't have a peaceful mind!). Or, if you are abroad, and you really want to know your result, just use the SMS service first.

This is how:

1) Type MUET RESULT<> No. IC send to 15888

OR

2) Type MUET<>No. IC send to 36363

If you want to know it 1 hour earlier (you can't wait for your teacher to come back from MPM...maybe he/she is stuck in the traffic jam or he/she might have just stop by at the mamak stall to eat first), this is what you can do:

1) Go to www.mpm.edu.my to check your status at 9.00am, 13 June 2011. (hopefully it's not lagging..)

And, if you are not satisfied with your result, you may appeal to remark your papers by 27 June 2011. BUT, you have to pay RM 70! (OMG, better just resit then...unless you really think that the examiners had made a mistake)

So, if you want to resit, you may register online by 21 July 2011 here:
http://www.mesp.gov.my/online

Alright, let's pray together that our result will be an excellent one! Good luck!

For your information, there have been some new changes to the MUET exam starting 2012. Let's see here:

1) Fee

Before: RM 60 (if I'm not mistaken, MUET is the most expensive government exam)

After : RM 100 ( don't be sad...well, inflation..)

2) Time

Before: The test is held twice a year, ie Mid-Year (April/May) and End-Year (October/November).

After : 3 times a year, in March, July and November (you have more chance to try your luck :)
